Canada Day
June 29, 2021
Statement by His Honour the Honourable Russ Mirasty:
“The news of the 751 unmarked graves at Cowessess at the site of the Marieval Indian Residential School, and the bodies of 215 children found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, as well as the killing of the Afzaal family in London, Ontario give us pause to think about what Canada Day means for each us. For me, it is about remembering and acknowledging the past. I believe that the way forward is through creating understanding. I encourage everyone to try to understand the impact of the residential schools. Understanding is how we can support each other and move forward together.
I do believe that we have much to celebrate as Canadians. I’m grateful for our health care and front line workers, our police and military, and our remarkable volunteers.”
