Next Lieutenant Governor Announced
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today the appointment of Bernadette McIntyre as the next Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.
Ms. McIntyre will become the 24th lieutenant governor of our province upon her installation. Under the constitution, lieutenant governors are appointed by the federal government for a minimum of five years, but there is no fixed term of office. His Honour the Honourable Russ Mirasty, who was sworn-in on July 17, 2019, will continue in the role until the date of the installation, which will be announced shortly. His Honour, called to congratulate the Lieutenant Governor Designate after the announcement.
Bernadette McIntyre is highly regarded for her extraordinary record of community service, leadership and volunteerism. She has donated her time and talents to a remarkable amount of sports organizations and other not-for-profit groups.
Ms. McIntyre is particularly passionate about curling - our province’s official sport. She has led the host committee for numerous major bonspiels including the Brier, Scott Tournament of Hearts, Canadian Olympic Trials and Grand Slams. In addition, she was on the 2022 and 2013 Grey Cup Festival Leadership Teams. She also co-chaired the 2018 CP Women’s Open - the first time a Ladies Professional Golf Association held a tournament in Saskatchewan. With decades of dedicated service to sports in our province, it is not surprising that Ms. McIntyre was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.
Ms. McIntyre was the Chief Executive Officer at Wascana Centre Authority, held senior positions with SGI and served on dozens of boards of directors and planning committees. Organizations having benefitted from her leadership include the University of Regina, Access Communications, the Regina Airport Authority, SaskSport, Canadian Curling Association, Sandra Schmirler Foundation, Highland Curling Club, Queen City Marathon and the Regina Exhibition Association Limited.
Ms. McIntyre holds degrees from the University of Regina in Economics and Business Administration with Great Distinction. She is married to Rich and has two adult children Lisa and Shawn.
