Remembering final visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Saskatchewan in 2005
In May 2005 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Saskatchewan in celebration of our province’s centennial. Stops on the trip included First Nations University of Canada, the Legislative Building and Government House in Regina, and the town of Lumsden.
While visiting the Legislative Building the beautiful statue of The Queen riding her beloved Burmese was unveiled. Burmese was a horse from Saskatchewan that the RCMP gifted to her Majesty and she went on to ride for 18 years!
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh also attended a spectacular gala in Saskatoon with performances by a mass choir, members of both the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Irish and Ukrainian folk dancers, and headliners that included Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, Colin James, Michael Burgess, Leslie Nielsen, Brent Butt and Shirley Douglas.
Everywhere the royal couple went crowds of adoring people lined up to get a glimpse of them or perhaps shake a hand. And, where the Queen and the Prince went the media followed.
